Virginia Tech Tree Identification offers a comprehensive resource for tree enthusiasts, bringing Virginia Tech's acclaimed digital dendrology materials to your iPhone. The application features detailed fact sheets for 969 woody plants found across North America, complete with in-depth descriptions, range maps, and a collection of over 6,400 color images showcasing leaves, flowers, fruit, twigs, bark, and form.
Users can leverage the application to pinpoint the specific species of trees present in their vicinity by utilizing the phone's GPS functionality or by inputting a specific address or zip code. This function effectively transforms the application into a tailored guide to "The Woody Plants of Where You Are Standing," offering insights into the flora of regions like Southwestern Oregon, Central Park, or specific geographic coordinates.
Furthermore, users can employ a simple tree attribute questionnaire within the app to further refine the species list based on criteria such as growth location, leaf characteristics, flower hues, or fruit types. Additionally, users can utilize keywords like oak, Abies, red, or palm to filter the list or direct tree-related inquiries to "Dr. Dendro," an expert from Virginia Tech's Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation who is available to assist with plant identification.

The multimedia tutorial "Woody Plants in North America, 2012" by Kendall/Hunt Publishing presents an extensive DVD compilation featuring information on 920 woody plants accompanied by over 23,000 vibrant color photographs capturing leaves in summer and fall, flowers, fruits, twigs, bark, and plant forms. The software's engaging interface includes multiple images of each plant part to facilitate a comprehensive understanding of field variations. Moreover, users can test their knowledge with a customizable self-quizzing section.
